You get closer to Christ by coming closer to each other. As Jesus said, “Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me.”
So you begin…I begin. I picked up one person – maybe if I didn’t pick up that one person I wouldn’t have picked up 42,000.
The whole work is only a drop in the ocean. But if I didn’t put a drop in, the ocean would be one drop less.
Same thing for you
same thing in your family
same thing in the church where you go
just begin…one, one, one
Mother Teresa wrote this. It emphasizes the overwhelming importance of each individual’s contribution. Each gift is vital. Each is necessary. Without it, the ocean, that is, the Kingdom of God, and its ability to convey God’s love to overwhelming human need, is correspondingly diminished. Serving is the ministry of each one of us.
But God’s love, this unique love that has real passion for serving others, and thus drawing closer to Christ, is unstoppable. In a parish I know, for example, when leadership didn’t provide the children and youth with kid-designed pledge cards, the youth and children brought their alms – dimes, quarters, and dollar bills – to church anyway. And when they came forward to receive Communion, the children and youth simply piled their alms on top of the altar rail – leaving behind piles of money each Sunday.
The Church’s response to the gifts of those, like these children and youth, and Mother Teresa, and her Sisters of Charity, and all, who love and seek to serve in God’s Name, is to cherish the gift and the giver and the giver’s ministry. The Church does so by being a good steward of what is offered.
One way that St. Martin of Tours seeks to practice good stewardship is by providing our parishioners and friends with quarterly financial statements. These statements will be mailed out this week.

Lora and Jim Finley at the reception in thanksgiving for Lora’s time as vestry clerk. Thank you, Lora!
For the many expressions of care that were shared with me by St. Martin family members at the recent death of my Mother, I’d just like to offer a heartfelt thank you! Grieving is a journey and an effort. But the bigger picture is this: my mother lived just three months shy of age 92, and her death was a blessing. She leaves behind for my sister Lynne and I many happy memories – also thankful hearts for a long life well lived. Thank you again… Jim+
